Scenic Passage: Kožuf to Mariovo

We often get asked about our favorite place in Macedonia, and the answer is always a never-ending debate. We agree on one location, only to find ourselves exploring another, realizing that each new one is more beautiful than the last.

Macedonia is so rich in natural beauty that it would take a lifetime to explore it all. If you’re here on our site, it means you’re someone who wants to know what treasures we have, and we’re thrilled about that!

Let’s get back to the title. You’ll often hear that Kožuf is among the most beautiful mountains in Macedonia, and there’s a good reason for that. Our latest adventure was completely spontaneous and unplanned, and our curiosity led us through the untouched terrain of this mountain.

After spending a few days in Mihajlovo at 1,200 meters above sea level, we packed up and set out for Prilep's Mariovo.

Here’s our route through one of the highest and most beautiful mountain passes in Macedonia. You can drive it with a jeep, motorcycle, bicycle, or even on foot.

From the direction of Kavadarci, head towards the village of Mrezhichko, where you’ll pass by the Kozhuvchanka factory and soon after, the Alsar mine. The views from here will make you feel like you’re in a scene from Jurassic Park.

You say goodbye to the last houses and immerse yourself in the heart of the green paradise, where a dense pine forest awaits, making you forget it’s summer.

The road is 40 km long, of which only 15 are paved, just enough to connect you with nature. There’s also a beautiful waterfall here, skillfully hidden in the wilderness—its name is Javorski.

The highest point reaches around 1,450 meters above sea level, where the mountain layers of Mariovo intertwine on the horizon. Although the final destination may seem close, don’t rush to get there, or you’ll miss the wild fruits hanging by the roadside, waiting for someone to pick them.

Pass the stone path that bears witness to the long history of the place, and you’re already in Vitolishte. If you have more time, continue exploring new, hidden spots that are worth returning to.

See you in the mountains,

Ana and Mane
