Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea<\/b>and also the highest. Each of its sides offers a different landscape, and if this sounds familiar, perhaps you've seen the movie \"Captain Corelli's Mandolin\"<\/i>.<\/p>

The island is rich with attractive locations and diverse scenery that won't let you go home without a ton of experiences and impressions. September is the last month of summer and marks the end of the season, making it ideal for visiting and exploring such places. The days are sunny and warm, the nights pleasant and fresh, and the number of tourists is significantly lower than in previous months. As travelers who avoid mass tourism, our decision to travel during this time of year was especially important and met all our needs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We accessed the island\u00a0via Lefkada<\/b>as the fastest route. We boarded a\u00a0ferry from the village of Vasiliki<\/b>in the south, although there's an option from Nidri (which was not available at the time). The trip takes\u00a01 hour<\/b>, after which you arrive on the northern part of Kefalonia, specifically in Fiskardo. A ferry ticket (two people + vehicle > 4.25m) costs\u00a0\u20ac63 one way<\/b>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A charming fishing village, hidden in the embrace of rocky hills dotted with countless olive trees, will greet you on the island and impress with\u00a0\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0434\u0438\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0430\u043b\u043d\u0430 \u0430\u0440\u0445\u0438\u0442\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0443\u0440\u0430<\/b>,\u00a0its traditional architecture, colorful houses, and narrow, picturesque streets.<\/b>\u00a0It's known for its harbor \u2013 a paradise for sailors \u2013 and the long row of taverns and bars that attract everyone who happens to walk by.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

To complete the picture, we must mention the surrounding beaches, which are a must-visit. These are small, mysterious spots, isolated from the constant tourist traffic, accessible by foot through short forest trails.<\/p>

After some time enjoying the beach, it was time to find our first camping spot. A huge help during those days was the\u00a0park4night<\/b>app, which contains camper-submitted info and experiences regarding overnight locations, particularly if you're traveling by vehicle.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

We chose the area near\u00a0Alaties Beach<\/b>and parked our vehicle on the edge of enormously high cliffs overlooking the sea. Our first impression of Kefalonia was complete when we woke up at 6 AM to a red sunrise pierced with the colors of a rainbow.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The next location in this guide is quiet and modest but\u00a0striking<\/b>\u00a0in the overall panorama. Assos is a small village that\u2019s a must-visit if you're on the island. Its uniqueness comes from a combination of colorful, pastel houses, calm beaches,\u00a0uninterrupted views of the turquoise sea<\/b>\u00a0, and lush vegetation. Add it to your list if you\u2019re a traveler who enjoys authentic Greek culture.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Our adventure changed direction as we crossed the mountains and arrived on the\u00a0eastern coast<\/b>. The reason for coming to the town of Sami was the campsite where we stayed for the next two nights!<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Sami is the perfect town for a summer vacation. Unlike the mountainous areas we had passed through, the terrain here was flat, the streets wide, and the Venetian buildings reflected the\u00a0island\u2019s rich heritage<\/b>. The main coastal road separates the large, busy port from a string of restaurants and shops.\u00a0<\/p>

Our second camping location was\u00a0Karavomilos Campground<\/b>in the town of Sami \u2013 a\u00a010\/10<\/b>\u00a0recommendation if you want to stay in one place and explore from there.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The campground is quite large and fully equipped, with spacious lots, plenty of shade, and multiple kitchens and toilet facilities.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

It\u2019s about\u00a01 km from the center of Sami<\/b>\u00a0- it's easy to walk to, or you can enjoy the beach with the same name right outside the entrance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Melissani Cave<\/b>\u00a0is located 1 km from Sami and is considered\u00a0one of the most unique places in all of Greece.<\/b>\u00a0\u0412\u043e \u043d\u0435\u0458\u0437\u0438\u043d\u0430\u0442\u0430 \u0432\u043d\u0430\u0442\u0440\u0435\u0448\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442 \u0441\u0435 \u043a\u0440\u0438\u0435\u00a0\u0435\u0437\u0435\u0440\u043e<\/b>\u00a0Inside, there's a lake with crystal-clear, turquoise water. The cave and lake are surrounded by\u00a0dense forest<\/b>, which for many years hid this natural wonder from tourists.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

It was discovered in the 1950s when the cave\u2019s ceiling collapsed, letting sunlight reveal the vibrant turquoise color of the water inside. The lake is also known as the\u00a0Lake of the Nymphs<\/b>, and according to locals, the name Melissani comes from one of them. It reaches depths of up to 5m and the cave itself is about 30 meters tall, with centuries-old stalactites and stalagmites adding to its\u00a0mysterious appearance<\/b>.<\/p>

We left Skala and continued along the main road, which\u00a0hugs the coastline with endless views of the Ionian Sea<\/b>. Not knowing our next camping destination, we decided to give the unknown a chance. Although we had noted down several places we wanted to visit on Kefalonia, this beach definitely wasn\u2019t on the list!<\/p>

It was time to urbanize our tour a bit, since we had been immersed in nature since our arrival. The city is a\u00a0real experience<\/b> , and without a doubt, it\u2019ll make you feel like you belong there! It's large, with several parallel streets running along its length, including the one by the harbor.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Over time, some streets became pedestrian-only zones and are now urban centers where many locals and tourists regularly pass through. Mornings in Argostoli are marked by two specific scents:\u00a0the smell of freshly baked pastries<\/b>\u00a0wafting through every corner, and the\u00a0scent of fresh fish<\/b>caught early in the morning, ready for sale at the harbor.<\/p>

But the most fascinating part of the morning is a\u00a0special<\/b>\u00a0recurring moment. As the fishing boats return to the port,\u00a0large sea turtles<\/b> arrive behind them \u2013 a major attraction for both locals and tourists.<\/p>

Kefalonia is home to two types of sea turtles. The first is\u00a0the Loggerhead sea turtle<\/b><\/i>, further known as\u00a0Caretta caretta<\/b><\/i>\u00a0, commonly seen along the southern coast and in Argostoli harbor. Lastly, we chose\u00a0Petani Beach<\/b>\u00a0before leaving the magical Kefalonia. It\u2019s tucked away on the westernmost part of the island, specifically on the\u00a0Paliki peninsula<\/b>\u00a0- and it left a strong impression on us. At first glance, it might not seem as attractive as Fteri or Myrtos, but it had\u00a0a special charm<\/b>\u00a0that made our stay truly pleasant.<\/p>

It\u2019s surrounded by rocks, and it\u2019s said to be known for the divers who come to explore. There are two tavernas and a row of sunbeds, so the enjoyment and service are complete.
